The British Gas Great North Swim takes place at the Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel and Marina, Lake Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 1LP. The above map relates to the 2011 event and is offered as a guide only. The details of the 2012 Swim may differ slightly.
How to get there:
Due to the number of swimmers and spectators visiting the event site, traffic around Windermere and Ambleside is always extremely busy. In order to minimise congestion, NO parking or dropping off is allowed at the event site.
Park, Sail and Walk
Participants are sent a Sail Discount Voucher in the event pack. This entitles each swimmer to use Windermere Lake Cruises services operating from Bowness to Brockhole, Bowness to Ambleside and Ambleside to Bowness piers at a discounted rate. From Ambleside Pier it is a one mile walk to the event site. From Brockhole Pier it is just less than a one mile walk to the event site. Refer to the back of the voucher for more information and sail operating times. Please note that not all the vessels sailing between Bowness and Ambleside are able to berth at Brockhole Pier.
- Please allow one hour travelling time from Bowness to the start area.
- We recommend that on your way to your swim that you use Brockhole (as this is a shorter walk to the Great Swim event site)
- Note all return departures to Bowness are from Ambleside Pier only.

Park and Walk
It is highly recommended that participants use the Park and Sail service, however limited parking is available in Ambleside/Waterhead. Follow the event parking signs. It is a one mile walk to the event site. Applicable car parking rates apply.
Cycle
A bike park will be available and it will be staffed but we recommend that you bring a suitable bike lock and do not leave any valuables with your bike.
Coach Service
In addition to the normal Stagecoach service operating in the Windermere area there will be an additional British Gas Great North Swim bus service operating on a first come first served basis from Brockhole - Low Wood - Ambleside on a loop service. Normal Stagecoach fares apply to this service.
